WILFRED (WILF) BUCKEL, President was a 1962 graduate of Ryerson Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Instrument Technology. He spent five years with Bailey Meter Company Ltd. in Pointe Claire, Quebec, where his work included such boiler projects as the Waubamun Unit #4 project firing coal and oil for Calgary Power. Later he worked seven years with Milltronics of Peterborough, Ontario, and two years with Holderbank Consulting Ltd. in Mississauga, Ontario, always in Project Management. After Holderbank he joined Moore Instruments Ltd. in Brampton, Ontario staying for fifteen years in the projects group, before purchasing Arctic Combustion in September, 1991.
Mr. Buckel’s experience includes design, applications, project management, and the functional checkout and start-up of many systems projects over his more than forty years in process control. His last three years at Moore Instruments Ltd. were as Manager of the Project Engineering Dept where he managed an 18 person department of engineers, technicians, drafting and clerical personnel. Within Ontario, Wilf participates in the TSSA specifically on oil firing.

JAMES (JIM) BUCKEL, Design Engineer, received his Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1993, after completing his Bachelor of Engineering in 1991 also at University of Toronto. He is a registered Ontario Professional Engineer and member of ASME.
Jim gained experience in process control from work with Moore Products Canada, and has completed courses in the use of Moore’s distributed control systems, single loop digital controllers, and operator interface software. Jim joined Arctic in March 1995 as a Design Engineer.
Jim’s responsibilities include design, configuration, installation, start-up, and service of digital control systems. He is also responsible for the AutoCAD systems, and the generation of Arctic Standards.

PETER BARHYDT, is a 1977 graduate of the University of Western Ontario in Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering. Peter has over twenty-five years in applications, project engineering and sales. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario and Newfoundland and a member of ISA and IPE.
His experience includes ten years in the pulp & paper industry, from production supervision and application specialist to project engineering and project management. Mr. Barhydt also had over ten years of sales and management experience at Moore Products Co. (Canada) Inc. At Moore he spent his last nine years as Regional Manager of Central Canada, where he managed a team of professional, including sales, support and applications personnel. Recently at Arctic, Peter has been particularly involved in BMS issues both in training and with the approval process. He is an active member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) 22.2#199 Committee on “Combustion Safety Controls and Solid State Igniters for Gas and Oil Burning Equipment” as well as a member of a volunteer task group reviewing the PLC requirements for the CSA B149.3#00 Committee “Code for Field Approvals of Fuel Related Components on Applications and Equipment” and TSSA subcommittee members on PLC implementation, grandfathering definitions, and oil code implementation. Peter has taught Burner Management concepts for a professional development/technical training institute.

Mr. Barhydt responsibilities are primarily sales and marketing; however, he also provides consulting in TSSA issues and Boiler Life Cycle Estimates and bid preparation/specification work to customers as needed.
BRYCE HYNDMAN, Combustion Specialist, joined Arctic Combustion in January of 2002. Bryce completed a full apprenticeship in Gas Fitting prior to receiving his G1 license in 1997. As well Bryce holds an electricians 442 license. Bryce’s duties at Arctic are primarily service and shop based
Bryce spent over 12 years at Aberfoyle Metal Furnaces where his responsibilities included many troubleshooting techniques relevant to a strong service skill-set. Before that, he was a machine operator, and still holds valid cards in crane operation, man-lifts and forklift operation. With his gas fitting skills and as an accomplished welder, Bryce is important in the fabrication of Arctic’s shop assemblies.
Bryce regularly provides estimation and construction services for Arctic projects where comprehensive pipe installation is involved.

HARRY TERPSTRA, Service Manager graduated in industrial instrumentation from Mohawk College in 1974. He gained significant experience within process companies in the golden horseshoe area of southern Ontario before joining Moore Products Company in 1980. During his ten years at Moore, Harry traveled across Canada, servicing and starting up boilers and other processes, lastly as a Senior Systems Specialist. During that time Harry criss-crossed Canada teaching Application courses on the Moore 352, the widest selling controller used. Later, for Marsh Engineering and Schneider (originally Modicon), Harry fulfilled the role of Service Manager with direction of 10-15 servicemen. Throughout his career Harry has always prided himself with a “hands on” approach.
Harry joined Arctic in the spring of 2003. At Arctic, we had the pleasure of working closely with Harry for many years, and recognized that Harry’s strong problem solving skills coupled with his obvious service approach could make us stronger. Harry’s field experiences make him a natural for training both instrumentation and boiler operations.

CHRIS STEPHENS, Combustion Specialist, is a TSSA qualified Burner Mechanic in both Natural Gas (G1) and Oil (OBT2), joined Arctic Combustion Limited in 2004 after returning to school to pursue combustion as a career. His earlier experiences include commercial and industrial maintenance on HVAC based equipment, particularly rooftop air conditioning, and other air handling units. As well, he worked for many years in the transportation sector, where he was a licensed mechanic and proceeded to become not only a licensed driver, but also a service technician, eventually becoming service manager for a transport company, System 55.
Chris has a particular interest and specialty in the installation of water columns and level based limits for burner management systems. His work and favourite customers includes:

SYNCLAIR (JUNYAN) HE, P. Eng., Project Manager has an engineering degree from Dalian Maritime University. His working career has been predominantly in China, where he first worked as a Marine Electrical Engineer for Tianjin Ocean Shipping Company, later teaching Marine Electrical Engineering before going back into industry as I & C Designer and Project Manager for a Siemens affiliate.
Synclair went back to school for his Masters Degree in Thermo Power Engineering from Zhejiang University. Afterwards he worked in business development and design for Dalian AmLong NewTech.

STUART BROWN, QA Manager, has been working in the field of inspections and insurance liaisons for more than twenty years. His original credentials include a Marine Chief Engineer First Class Certificate, with varied experiences in freight ship power plants and engines. Stuart also worked later at Ontario’s Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (MCCR), where he provided inspection services for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, and the Operating Engineers. As well as operating as a Jurisdictional Inspector, Provincial Offences Officer, he worked as a Nuclear Safety Officer for Construction of Pressure Retaining Components. These experiences led him to later positions as an ASME audit team member and Liaison to the AECL Nuclear Project managers as well as inspection, of repair and construction projects from antique riveted boilers to Class 1 Nuclear Fueling Machines. His most recent work after branching out on his own included work as a chartered Insurance Professional with Risk Insurance Management as his interest, later as a consultant for developing TSSA approved plans for Power Piping, Process Piping and Boiler Repair.
Stuart covers Eastern Ontario and the Maritimes for Arctic Combustion, as well as inspection and QA services.
SIMON REYNOLDS, Instrumentation Specialist, Graduated from Mohawk College in Chemical Engineering Technology in 1973. His career started at Dofasco where he initially worked as a production specialist. His interest in instrumentation grew and he entered the Instrumentation and Combustion Department where he completed the rigorous apprenticeship as a Instrumentation and Combustion Specialist. After this 19 year career at Dofasco, he left during a downsizing to take up more general instrumentation work at Ontario Process control. In this position he provided the instrumentation support on many SNC projects at International Wax, Scarborough Ontario. Within this ongoing work, Simon gained his G1 gas fitters certificate, joining Durham Combustion for a few years before coming on with Arctic Combustion.

STEPHEN LI , Combustion System Designer, has over ten years experience in power plants involving boiler control and automation. He is familiar with and programmed all sorts of PLCs and DCSs including ABB (Bailey), Siemens, Hitachi, Omron, Sulzer systems. Stephen holds an Electrical Engineering degree in 1993 from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and is pursuing his professional status here in Canada.

MARK DEXTER, Project Manger, came to Arctic after an extensive career in the U.K. followed by very relevant experience here in Canada. A 1982 graduate from Hugh Baird Technical College, he originally worked for Tricon Electrical Engineers. Attaining his electrical trade licenses, he worked for Collingwood Hydraulics, where he designed built and installed Electrical Control Panels for ships, followed up with more responsible positions with Seaforth Welding. He later started his own business - Dexlec Electrical Engineers a Control Panel Design and Manufacture company in Liverpool. Mark grew the company to 70 people before leaving to hold successive management positions in Electrical Integrated Systems and Guilbrent NW.
Mark emigrated to Canada in 2002, working initially in Medium and High Voltage Installations, before joining Hiram Walker in 2003, where he capably developed many cost and risk savings projects working as the Central Maintenance Planner. Mark left to join Q-tec where he managed 5 electrical engineers, seeking out Waste to Energy Schemes and opportunities in Energy Management field. Here he gained significant experience in robotics and vision systems.
He joined Arctic Combustion in May 2007 as a project engineer, where he has been designing control systems and managing projects throughout. His major projects include:
- SI Group, Scarborough, Heat Recovery Steam Generator Project. Design of Controls and Project Management. Responsible for Complete Package from Initial TSSA approvals to Project Management on site of all trades, Boilermakers, Riggers, Insulators and Electrical Contractors.
- INCO Sudbury, 70,000llbs per hour Temporary Boiler Project. Project Management and Controls design. Responsible for the complete installation, start-up and commissioning of the boiler, including TSSA approvals for Fuels and Pressure Vessels, Fuel Variances, for American Boiler for use in Ontario.. Onsite Project Management of all subcontractors and ensuring TSSA and Inco;s standards adhered to.
- Design Supply and Install Linkageless Controls for boilers 1, 2, and 3, including VFD drives at IGI Group. Scarborough, ON
CRAIG MATTHEWS, Account Manager SW Ontario, is a 1986 graduate in Bio-Chemistry from McMaster University. He worked for more than twelve years at Nalco where he gained a considerable knowledge of the water side of boilers, and as such, brought to Arctic Combustion a wealth of complementary knowledge to our standard main core of boiler controls, burner management, and the fire side of boiler installations. Also, Craig developed skills in marketing and technical support through his work at an industrial coatings company, StonCor as well as a building systems manufacturer, Canam Steel Works. In addition to sales coverage in southwestern Ontario, Craig regularly parcticipates in Arctic Combustions water side reviews, and can offer unbiased consulting into water treatment issues. He parcticipates in the Institute of Power Engineers, and is well known in power plants across southern and southwestern Ontario.

DENIS SEARS, Account Manager,- Maritimes is aMechanical Engineering Technologist, joined Arctic Combustion in November of 2007. Denis obtained his diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Buildings & Energy from NBCC in Moncton, NB in 1988. Denis’s duties at Arctic are primarily to support the growth of Arctic’s sales and service offerings in Atlantic Canada. Denis has worked for Public Works and Government Services Canada in the Technical Support Group of Facilities Management and sales for Honeywell Home and Building Controls. He spent over 10 years with Black and McDonald Ltd. in sales and as the Area Supervisor for the New Brunswick Service Division where he managed a group of 22 professionals including Administration, Estimating & Sales, HVAC Technicians and Stationary Engineers. His responsibilities also included mechanical design, estimating, and proposal development in support of the existing and new customer base. He currently holds a 4th class stationary engineers license and is a member of IPE and ASHRAE. He has sat as a Director and Chairman on the board of the Mechanical Contractors Association of New Brunswick, The New Brunswick Chapter of ASHRAE and as a Management representative on the Joint Conference Board and Trustee of the New Brunswick Pipe Trades Pension Plan.

PATRICK MAGILL, Inside Sales Representative. Focussing on enhancing the quality of service, Arctic has incorporated an Inside Sales Specialist to better address customer needs, anticipate and respond to customer issues with the aim of exceeding client expectations. Patrick MaGill more than fills our requirements for these functions.
Patrick graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1999 with a Bachelors in History, and started his career at IBM Canada, where he held various positions as Information Specialist, Pre- Sales Specialist and finally a Brand Solution Specialist for IBM’s platform of multi-tier enterprise software applications. After several years at IBM, Patrick extended his Business Development skills to an international assignment for an IBM Distributor in the Arabian Gulf. Focused primarily on Government clients, Patrick drove strategies to integrate and modernize the legacy 3GL applications of Kuwait’s Ministries. Returning to Canada, Patrick continued his Business Development activity with a Document Management company focused on enterprise content management solutions for clients in the New England territory. Patrick brings to Arctic experience in Account Management, Customer Relations and a solution approach to problem solving. As well, Patrick is a TSSA qualified G2 Fuel Technican.
GLENN SUCHECKI, Instrumentation Technician. Glenn studied instrumentation in high school and from there he went on to Mohawk College taking both day and night courses in instrumentation. His 30 year Instrumentation career started at Dofasco where he apprenticed and completed his instrumentation apprenticeship and has worked in the instrumentation field up until his recent retirement from Dofasco. He worked in numerous areas of Dofasco, they being, the No1 and No2 Melt Shop, Blast Furnaces, Air Separation Units, and Utilities Gas distribution and Primary Waste water treatment plant’s.
During his time at the Melt Shop he maintained burner and drying ovens used for drying refractory in the steel making area. Through out his career at Dofasco he has worked on various DCS and PLC equipment installations and upgrades, involving Bailey Network 90 and Infi 90 DCS, and Allen Bradley Control Logix PLC systems. Also he has had experience maintaining and troubleshooting a variety of analytical instrumentation, single loop process measurement and control instrumentation, flow measurement instrumentation including brands such as Rosemount, Bailey, Honeywell, Fisher, Valtek to name a few.
Glenn’s last position at Dofasco was as “Instrumentation Trade Specialist Gas Distribution and Primary Waste Water Treatment”. Then in 2008 after a 30 year carrier at Dofasco he decided the time was right to retire and take up a new challenge working for Arctic Combustion. Having his G2 gasfitter license he is now pursuing his G1 license.
During his brief time at Arctic Combustion he has been involved in the Installation and startup of:
- Coca Cola No 2 Boiler: Control upgrade with Nexus Integrated Controller PPC3000
parallel positioning burner control and management system. - IGI Wax: No1, No2, and No3 Boiler: Control upgrade with Nexus Air Fuel Ratio Controller
PPC5000 parallel positioning burner control system. - Gas Turbine start-up and Commissioning, Duct Burner rebuild London District Energy, London Ontario
RITA TERSTEEGE, Office Manager. Customer Service Representative and Accounting Specialist, joined Arctic Combustion in May, 2006. Rita has a Marketing Certificate and is attending Sheridan College to attain her Degree in Accounting. She is Commissioner for Arctic Combustion and has her forklift training making her a very versatile employee.
Rita has spent 15 years in the Industrial Chemical Industry as Office Manager performing services similar to that of Arctic Combustion, previous experience has mainly been in an industrial setting attaining experience in both Customer Service/Sales and Accounting.
Rita’s responsibilities at Arctic include:
- Customer Service
- Tracking projects
- Accounts Receivable and all aspects within its parameter
- Accounts Payable and all aspects within its parameter
- Payroll Administration
- Purchasing
- Shipping/Receiving
IVAN HOLJEVAC, Instrumentation Technician, His career started 1977 at Dofasco with the Instrumentation and Combustion Department where he completed the rigorous apprenticeship as an Instrumentation and Combustion Technician. After 30 year career at Dofasco, as Combustion & instrumentation trade specialist / Team leader, he gained extensive experience in preventive maintenance, equipment troubleshooting, new plant start-ups and upgrades. He possesses PLC and DCS experience as well as extensive knowledge of burner controls and troubleshooting.
STEVEN BOOTH, Instrumentation Technologist. Steve joined Arctic Combustion in May of 2008 after graduating from St. Lawrence College in the Instrumentation and Control Technologist program.
Being heavily lab based, the Instrumentation program at St. Lawrence has provided Steven with a solid background in the hands-on aspect of instrumentation. Having worked extensively with the Moore 352 controller and an array of Rosemount transmitters, he has gained a solid knowledge base of wiring, and programming these units.
Working closely with experienced veterans of the field has enabled him to learn about a wide variety of instrumentation equipment and techniques in a short amount of time.
Projects where Steven has had interest and involvement include:
- St. Joe’s Health Services – High Water Cut-out and column blowdown design and wiring London Psych Campus, London, ON
- GTAA –Annual instrument and limit checks, Toronto, ON
- Invista – TSSA upgrade, involving fuel train alterations and PLC based BMS upgrades, Maitland Ontario and Kingston, Ontario
- IGI – Instrumentation service contract, Scarborough, Ontario
NICK BATTY, Pressure Welder and Jr. Boiler Maker. Nick Batty has been in metal fabrication since the time he started to earn a pay. He began working in a press shop making parts for oil refinery equipment; later moving on to work for a welding and fabrication business. Here he assembled and welded heavy-duty truck trailers for moving large quantities of materials.
After completing a course at Canadian Welding Skills School, in Bridge North Ontario, Nick worked at a small, custom trailer, manufacturing company. After a short time there Nick joined the team at Arctic Combustion in October of 2008.
Nick has currently completed his G3 gas fitter license; he is also certified in both stainless and carbon steel in the 6G or all positions. Nick has been on a variety of different projects while working for Arctic, in which he has acquired necessary skills to work safely and effectively.
Some projects Nick has had particular involvement in include:
- Maple Leaf Foods- Fabricated and installed a stainless steel gas line for a meatball cooker. Brampton, On.
- OPG-Darlington- Involved in the re-tubing of several back up boilers on site, Darlington, On.
- Ash Bridges Bay- Assisted in the refurbishing of the main boilers in the plant to prevent further sulfur corrosion, Toronto, On.
- London District Energy- Changed the burners and FD fans on two boilers at LDE site, to provide boilers with a lower NOx output, London, On.
- IGI- Assisted in a boiler change over to a linkage less control design. Did the fabrication to the gas line and valve brackets, Scarborough, On.
JAMES (JIM) BALL, Sales and Service Representative, has over fifty years experience selling, designing, building and servicing boiler control systems. Jim started Arctic Combustion in 1973 after 18 years with Republic Flow Meters.
Jim Ball has been associated with the sale, design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of burner management systems and control systems for power and process applications all his working life and represents a wealth of knowledge and experience at Arctic.
There is no boiler control specialist or field serviceman with more hands-on experience than Jim Ball.
